Welcome to our inaugural Dance Residency Showcase! This year, our panel chose 3 talented dancers to create our first ever Dance Residency class. These dancers received 6 hours of studio time each week to explore their work, delve into some new performance ideas, and ultimately, have created this show for you, our audience. Artist Statements:
claire barrera is an interdisciplinaryย artist exploring how power, discipline, care and transformation manifest in intra- and interpersonal dynamics. Their current projectย Came Back Different, researched during their residency at Chapel Theater, explores shifts in perception and perspective over time. Tricks, tropes and time manipulation expose the mechanics of recollection and historical construction.
Jess Zoller is a contemporary dance choreographer, performer and teacher. During her residency at Chapel Theater, Jess collaborated with writer, TJ Acena, and sound designer, Rory Stitt.ย Fullย explores desires, illusions, appetites, and consumption through the many versions of ourselves over time.ย
Alana Rae is an emerging choreographer who has recently been exploring how movement can interact with set design/visual art. They have spent the last six months reflecting, journaling, and playing in the Chapel Theater Annex to explore an individual’s experience with the wounds that life gives. Their piece “I remember the sky” reflects how we find our ways to persevere, stay intact with all necessary parts of the self, and recover. All necessary to continue upward and outward.ย
